Emma Martin

Graduate Student

Research Advisor: Boubacar Kante
BETR Research Thrust: Photonics and Optical Interconnects

Bio

Emma received her B.S. in Electrical Engineering from West Virginia University in 2020, where she was a researcher in the Semiconductor Quantum Optics Laboratory. She is pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley as an NDSEG fellow under the supervision of Professor Boubacar Kante. Her research interests are laser science and semiconductor fabrication.

Research

Semiconductor lasers are critical for the future of optical communication, sensing, and photonic integrated circuits. We have developed a novel type of semiconductor laser, known as the BerkSEL, which demonstrates single-mode lasing at large cavity sizes. Emma specializes in the fabrication and development of the next generation of this laser technology, focusing on a novel electrical injection scheme, an important step towards device integration.
