Bio

Linhong Chen is a Ph.D. candidate in Material Science & Engineering at UC Berkeley, working under the supervision of Prof. Jie Yao. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology at Guangdong, China, where he worked on phase-change behavior in layered materials under extreme high pressure. His current research is focused on emergent ferroic orders in two-dimensional materials.

Research

Group IV monochalcogenides (MXs) materials are polar compounds that form a puckered layer structure similar to that of the black phosphorus. The remarkable characteristic of MX materials lies in their unconventional ferroelectric response with 4 ground states that allow ultrafast transitions between distinct crystalline structures with strong optical and electrical anisotropy. Linhong’s research involves the detection and manipulation of its optical or electrical properties by manipulating the polarization.
