Philip Jacobson is in the second year of his Ph.D. studies at UC Berkeley, working in Professor Ming Wu’s group. His current research aims to build hardware accelerators for AI through leveraging photonics. Previously, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in physics at Cornell University. Outside of the lab, he enjoys hiking, scuba diving, and reading.
Research
My current research looks to leverage reservoir computing, a lightweight machine-learning paradigm ideal for implementation in hardware. Through implementation in optics, reservoir computing has the potential to far surpass traditional neural network models in training speed. Currently, I’m working on adapting optoelectronic reservoir computing for image recognition tasks: something outside of its traditional scope.
