BETR Research Thrust: Integrated Photonics

Bio

Sirui Tang is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley, working under the supervision of Professor Ming C. Wu. He received his B.S. degree in Optical Engineering from The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester in 2023. His current research focuses on integrated photonics for next-generation optical interconnects.

Research

Scalable optical interconnect technologies are becoming increasingly critical for next-generation data centers, especially as AI systems continue to drive growing demands on bandwidth density and energy efficiency. Sirui’s research focuses on optical packaging and switching technologies, including photonic I/Os for co-packaged optics (CPO) systems and photonic MEMS optical circuit switches (OCS). His current work includes developing a wafer-scale SiON platform with integrated microlens couplers for efficient, robust, and potentially detachable fiber-to-chip coupling, as well as investigating poly-Si-on-SOI platforms for zero-standby-power and fully addressable photonic MEMS switching architectures.
