Johannes graduated from Lund University, Sweden, with a Master’s degree in Engineering Physics which also included one year at UCLA as an exchange student. He has work experience from BorgWarner, ON Semiconductor and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Apple. Johannes is currently pursuing his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UC Berkeley where he is working with Prof. Ming Wu on MEMS and silicon photonics.
Research
Our group is working on large-scale low-loss optical switches for datacenter applications. We use a silicon photonics platform with MEMS actuators that physically move waveguides to achieve optical switching. The switching speed is sub-microsecond and radix as large as 240×240 has been demonstrated. We are also working on low-loss optical packaging solutions as well as electrical integration with high-voltage driver chips. Our crossbar switch architecture is fundamentally more scalable than conventional integrated optical switches based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers.
